Punt builds, explained — and how to know if yours is real
A target, not a sacrifice. How league-aware z-scores turn 'sub-optimal' players into category-winning anchors.
What a punt actually is
A punt build deliberately concedes one or two categories to dominate the rest. The math works because head-to-head category leagues reward winning by 0.001 the same as winning by 0.5. So you trade negligible value in 1–2 categories for outsized value in 7–8.
Why generic z-scores lie
Standard ratings include every selected category. If you deliberately exclude FT%, an all-category composite answers the wrong build question unless the omission is explicit.
Recompute against your targeted categories, but preserve the excluded category in the assumptions. The result is build value, not universal player value.
Knowing your punt is real
A real punt has three traits:
- The punted category is consistently expensive to recover relative to the alternatives.
- The gained categories improve enough to change matchup or season outcomes.
- The conclusion survives reasonable changes to rolling window, availability, and schedule.
If any of those fail, you don't have a punt build — you have a hole.
